Live Cinema
REALTIME AUDIOVISUAL ART
By curator Mia Makela
In the past few years there has been an explosion of interest in real time video thanks to the development of new tools, digital programs and the “laptop” culture in general. Now more than ever, musical concerts go hand in hand with visual projections. The current exploration of new ways to perform live and the new generation of audiovisual programs have resulted in a medium that is attractive to artists who want to mix different disciplines such as design, architecture, music, dance, programming and image.
The term “LIVE CINEMA” tries to define artistic audiovisual creation in real time. The applications of this practice are diverse, and every artist explores the possibilities through different methods: generative visuals and live painting (Casey Reas, Lia, Jasch), processing of the video signal (Kurt Ralske, Johnny deKam), editing and visual composition in real time (Sue C.). We are in an exciting moment of searching for new audiovisual languages, strengthened by new technologies and by the creation of alternative experiences in cinema and video art.
The interest in creating audiovisual experiences in real time and in the mixing of the audio with the visual in a non-narrative way has existed for centuries. Already in 1600 the magic lanterns became the spectacles of the cities, followed by multiple inventions such as the colour organs and audiovisual machines. In the beginning of the 20th Century, the search for a universal system between color and audio played a part in the research of artists of the day, such as Kandinsky, the father of modern art. The pioneers of experimental animation, such as Len Lye and Oscar Fishinger, dedicated themselves to the practice of visual music. These traditions continue today in the creation of live cinema performances.
The context of “live cinema” is ephemeral, as each performance is usually a one-shot, not repeated, the recordings of these performances being the only lasting record. The collection of DVDs in the framework of “live cinema” at the Media Centre aspires to offer an archive of these performances.
LIVE CINEMA – a night of debates, talks and performances took place at the Caixaforum Foundation in the framework of the I-Dissabtes on November 10, 2007.
